KYE on MH
This is just a quick note to encourage all readers here to listen to the latest episode of Know Your Enemy, which takes on Magnifica Humanitas. It by far the best commentary on it that I’ve come across. These guys are really special. This one is available to non-subscribers, but you should all get a subscription.
It surprised me how many of the responses to the encyclical were to nit-pick at this or that. They treated it as something akin to a state of the union address rather than trying to engage with it on its own terms—Why didn’t you address this concern I have or this other thing, and it’s weak on this and too much of that. In other words they fail to take the document seriously on its own terms and so miss its richness and depth.
Sam and Matt, and their guest Jack Hanson, don’t make that mistake, and they see things in it that almost everybody else I’ve read have missed. (Sam, the Jewish/Freudian/Marxist in this trio sees things in it that most Catholic commentators missed.) Well worth your time to listen to it and to appreciate its significance, not for being the last word on AI, but for its role in laying the foundation for thinking about it by all morally and intellectually serious people in the coming decades—not just Catholics.

“I think this is a major take away from the encyclical, where it's re-establishing the primacy of discernment, the sort of free and creative negotiation of tensions, as opposed to providing a kind of magisterial answer to every question.”
